Analog television using an antenna to receive free tv will not work after June 12, 2009. Television viewers with these sets that are not connected to a pay TV service will be affected. Most consumers who purchase a converter box today can connect it to their existing television and begin enjoying the benefits of digital television immediately. If you own a television with a digital tuner or subscribe to a pay TV service, you will not need a converter box. Over 19.6 million households receive over-the-air signals exclusively in their homes, and over 14.9 million households have secondary over-the-air TV sets in their bedrooms or kitchens. Overall, nearly 70 million television sets will be affected by the DTV transition. If your television has a digital tuner already built in it will be able to receive digital signals. To find out if your television has a built in digital tuner please consult your owner's manual or visit your television manufacturer's website. If your television was purchased before 1998 you most likely have an analog set. Big screen or projection televisions purchased between 1998 and 2004 may have a built-in digital tuner, but many do not. If you purchased your television since 2004 there is a good chance that your television already has a built-in digital tuner, but it is not a guarentee. Note that the transition only applies to full-power TV stations. Some low-power stations will remain in analog, so you may need specific equipment to watch analog and digital broadcasting after the transition. "Pass-through" converter boxes allow your TV set to receive both analog and digital signals.
