Digital Television (DTV) is an advanced broadcasting technology that will enhance your off-air television experience by enabling broadcasters to supply better picture and sound quality, offer multiple programming choices and interactive capabilities. DTV includes all types of digital broadcasting, including High and Standard Definition television, datacasting and multicasting. You can watch your own favorite local programming for FREE just by using an antenna!
Analog broadcasting is the traditional method of transmitting television signals. Analog transmission has been the standard broadcast television technology but is not as efficient as DTV and uses up a much more valuable spectrum. Analog transmissions are also prone to outside interferance or "snow", making your picture less clear.
Currently, 1,631 out of 1,760 full-power television stations nationwide already offer digital programming in every market in America. To see if your local station currently broadcasts in digital, click here.
The DTV transition will take place on June 12, 2009.
